southampton vs Chelsea live match

Chelsea takes on Southampton in the Premier League on Tuesday night looking to work their way up the table.

While Chelsea is in sixth place after beating Leicester City at the weekend, Southampton, who are in 14th place, can overtake their nearest rivals with a win at St. Mary's.

Match preview

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel, who was forced to sit in the stands due to his one-match suspension, was able to assess his players from a different perspective over the weekend.

The unnecessary sending-off for Conor Gallagher would have infuriated him, but the reaction with ten men would have given him certainty about the character of a team in transition.

More new faces will arrive at Chelsea in the coming days, most notably Wesley Fofana from Leicester, for whom a transfer fee has reportedly already been agreed.

However, Tuchel wanted to see an improvement in his current team, in which Raheem Sterling scored his first two goals in a Chelsea shirt and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy made up for his mistake in the last game against Leeds United.

In the short term, Chelsea must ensure that the five-point gap to league leaders Arsenal does not widen, although Tuchel will demand that his players focus on one game at a time and try to avoid mistakes and perform better in the final third.

Southampton was outstanding for long stretches of the encounter at St. Mary's against Manchester United at the weekend.

In the end, however, Ralph Hasenhuttl's side was made to pay for their numerous missed chances as Bruno Fernandes scored the only goal of the game.

After the 4-1 opening defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, the Austrian took four points from three games and will be pleased with his side's performance.

However, early indications are that Hasenhuttl and the Saints have done some excellent business in the transfer market this summer. Both defender Armel Bella-Kotchap and midfielder Romeo Lavia have impressed so far.

One or two more additions are likely to follow in the coming days, so fans are far more optimistic about developments than they might have been a few months ago.

Team News

Chelsea will have to do without Gallagher as the midfielder serves his one-match suspension following two yellow cards against the Foxes.

Kalidou Koulibaly will return after his suspension, which could lead to Tuchel reverting to a three-man backline, with Trevoh Chalobah retaining his place on the right.

Marc Cucurella could get a rest, allowing Ben Chilwell to return at left-back. Mateo Kovacic could return to action from the bench after making his comeback from a knee injury at the weekend.

Provided there are no injury problems from the weekend, Hasenhuttl will consider fielding the same team as against Southampton XI.

Bella-Kotchap picked up some sort of muscle injury early in the second half against United, but the center-back was able to finish the game.

Stuart Armstrong is an option on one of the two flanks if Hasenhuttl wants to strengthen his team with fresh forces.

  1. Southampton's possible starting lineupBazunu; Walker-Peters, Bella-Kotchap, Salisu, Djenepo; Ward-Prowse, Lavia; A.Armstrong, Aribo, Elyououssi; Adams.
  2. Possible Chelsea starting line-upMendy; Chaloba, Silva; Koulibaly; James, Jorginho, Loftus-Cheek, Chilwell; Bracket, Sterling; Havertz.

Forecast of the result: Southampton - Chelsea 1:1

Chelsea got three points at the weekend but had to play with ten men for over an hour. Also, considering less recovery time, we are betting on Southampton to take a share of the spoils, possibly even maximum points if they act more ruthlessly in the final third.
